Balance
Balance is a personal finance app for iOS connected to Apple Pay, designed to record every expense automatically. I designed and developed it with Expo, React Native, @expo/ui SwiftUI components and local SQLite storage. All data stays on the device: I do not collect or store financial information on servers.
The starting point
Recording expenses manually adds friction and leaves many financial tools out of date. At the same time, centralising that information on servers means trusting especially sensitive data to a third party.
Automatically record every Apple Pay expense and offer a clear view of personal finances without data ever leaving the iPhone.
My role
I lead the product end to end: architecture, interface design and development with Expo, React Native and native iOS modules.
What I built
- Apple Pay integration to record every expense automatically
- A fully local architecture: SQLite as the source of truth, with no accounts or server-side data storage
- Native @expo/ui components built on SwiftUI, Expo Router navigation and Liquid Glass on iOS 26
- Custom Swift modules for App Intents, Shortcuts and iOS security coordination
- PIN and Face ID with Keychain-protected credentials through Secure Store
- Track each source separately while always presenting a clear overall picture
- Show balance trends and category patterns instead of raw transaction lists
- A final summary view designed to answer 'where do I stand right now?' at a glance
Outcome
In active development, with automatic expense tracking and the core overview and summary screens underway. All information remains on-device.
Stack
Expo 57, React Native, TypeScript, Expo Router, @expo/ui (SwiftUI), SQLite, Reanimated, Swift / App Intents.
